起源
莎士比亚名剧《麦克白》(Macbeth)中，因为主人公麦克白用weird sisters来称呼他在荒野上遇见的三个女巫，而使weird被人们熟知。这里的weird并没有不敬之意，weird sisters原指神话中的三个女神，相当于希腊神话中的Fates和北欧神话中的Norns，而weird一词在古英语中写作wyrd，原本就是“命运”的意思。
weird原来是名词，经此一用变成了形容词，人们只要一想到“命运”，不免有种“宿命感”和“奇怪的”感觉，不过一般用于口语。

起源
公元450年，盎格鲁撒克逊人(Anglo-Saxons)人入侵英伦诸岛，他们把那里的原住民凯尔特人(Celts)称作wealh，意思是“外国人”。
十五世纪后，该词演变成Wales，成为英国王子的封号，其形容词形式waelisc(外国的)演变为现在的Welsh，用来表示“威尔士的”，作名词时指“威尔士人”或“威尔士语”。
